A Catawba riverfront settlement that grew around a grist mill and fort
Thomas Spratt's family settled Fort Mill's site in the 1750s on Catawba-leased land near an old grist mill and a small British fort, and the settlement carried that name by 1830 before the 1852 rail depot on William White's land pulled downtown toward the tracks. The town chartered in 1873.
